I just voted — first thing in the morning, before I even made coffee. It’s not really that impressive, as the polling place is literally right behind my house.
In cold, canned terms, “I did my duty”. But I got to thinking about that idea a little. I remember a WWII airforce vet, an old friend of the family, describing to me a little of his experience during that war. I am still in awe of what men like him did and had to endure — a time when duty meant more than getting up a little early and walking across the dewy grass to the fire station.
I remember telling Col. Sauls that I was humbled and awed by veterans like him. I didn’t think I could ever do what they did. I still wonder. But he looked me in the eyes and said something like “Your grandfather did; if you had to, you would.” I know he was right. God forbid it ever comes to the place where “duty calls” like that.
So, this morning I’m grateful — grateful that all duty, or more properly Providence, asked of me today was a simple statement of preference for who I think would lead the country best — a vote. I’m glad I didn’t shirk the responsibility for the sake of a few more minutes sleep.
If you haven’t already, go vote. Much more has been asked of men and women before you, so be grateful for the easy duty asked of you today.
